Our Mission
Every successful journey begins at the trailhead.
Trailhead Technology Consulting was founded to give small businesses something they’ve never really had: an IT advisor with no product to sell them.
Every IT company, MSP, and tech support shop makes money when you buy more — more seats, more months, more hardware. That’s not a character flaw; it’s their business model. But it means the advice you get from a vendor is never fully independent. Trailhead doesn’t resell hardware, software, or managed services contracts. We have no vendor affiliations and no referral kickbacks. Our only job is to give you the right advice — which means you can actually trust it.
Most of our clients are running on a mix of tools that just sort of happened over time, with no clear plan and no one to turn to for an honest second opinion. We’re that second opinion.
Our Approach
Most businesses don’t need a technology strategy — they need someone to look at what they have and tell them what’s actually worth worrying about.
We start with a conversation, not a framework. The goal is to understand your business first: how you work, what’s causing friction, and what’s at risk. From there, we give you a clear picture of where things stand and a practical path forward — no jargon, no padded deliverables.
We believe organizations benefit most when technology planning is:
Getting ahead of problems instead of just putting out fires.
Not overbuilt for its own sake — practical and proportionate.
No assumptions about what you already know.
Aligned with what you’re actually trying to accomplish as a business.
No affiliations that influence what we recommend.
The goal is always the same: you walk away understanding what you have, what needs attention, and what to do about it — in plain terms.
Leadership
Trailhead Technology Consulting is led by Justin Bennett, a Vermont-based technology professional with hands-on experience across a wide range of business environments — from small local organizations to larger enterprise operations.
Before starting Trailhead, Justin spent years watching small businesses get oversold on technology they didn’t understand, overpay for tools they didn’t need, and struggle to get straight answers from vendors with something to sell. The pattern was consistent: business owners would sign a managed IT contract, trust the vendor to handle everything, and eventually realize they had no idea what they were paying for or whether it was the right fit. There was never a trusted, independent voice in the room.
That’s what Trailhead was built to be. Years of watching that pattern repeat — and never finding an independent voice in the room — is what drove it. That breadth of experience across different business environments means we know what good looks like at scale, and how to translate it into something practical for a 10-person shop, a growing trade business, or a lean nonprofit: clear advice, honest recommendations, and solutions that actually fit.
Who We Work With
We work best with small and mid-sized organizations (typically 1–150 employees) across New England that rely on technology to run their business but don’t have dedicated IT staff.
Retail & storefront
Local shops, boutiques, and storefronts managing day-to-day operations without an IT person on staff.
Trades & field services
Construction, carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, and HVAC businesses making technology calls between jobs.
Professional services
Nursing, counseling, consulting, legal, and accounting practices handling sensitive client data.
Outdoor & recreation
Guides, outfitters, ski areas, and recreation businesses where a tech failure at peak season is a real cost.
Nonprofits
Trail organizations, community nonprofits, and grant-funded groups operating on lean budgets with real security exposure.
These are organizations that know technology matters but don’t have time to become experts in it. That’s where we come in.
Why Trailhead
Think about how a fee-only financial advisor works: they’re legally required to act in your interest, they don’t earn commissions, and they tell you the truth even when it’s not what you want to hear. That’s rare in the financial world — and it barely exists at all in small business IT.
Trailhead fills that gap. We don’t sell hardware, software, or cloud services — we carry no vendor affiliations and accept no referral fees. That independence means our recommendations are based entirely on what fits your organization, your goals, and your budget — not on margin or monthly recurring revenue.
This matters most at the moments that cost the most: before you sign an MSP contract, before you migrate your systems, before you buy a new phone platform, before you hand IT over to a vendor. Those are exactly the moments when having someone in your corner — someone with no financial stake in the outcome — pays for itself.
When implementation requires bringing in a vendor or managed service partner, we help you identify the right one and stay independent throughout. Our job is to help you find the right path forward — not to steer you toward any particular product or platform.
Ready when you are.
